The most expensive mistake new franchisors make

Ask a room of new franchisors what worries them and most will say recruitment. But the real danger is not signing too few franchisees. It is signing the wrong ones.

A franchisee who does not fit your brand costs you far more than an empty territory. They underperform, they pull down your standards, and they are painful and expensive to remove. One bad signing can undo months of good work across the rest of your network.

The pull to say yes is strong, especially early on. The fee is sitting in front of you and the pipeline looks thin. But the money from the wrong franchisee is the most expensive money you will ever take.

The fix is not complicated, it is just disciplined. Know exactly who you are looking for before you start. Screen properly against that profile. Ask the awkward questions early, not after they have signed. And be willing to walk away from someone who can afford the fee but does not fit the brand.

Recruit for fit, not just funds, and the rest of the job gets easier.
